If you float the desk, size the rug so the desk and chair stay on it even when you slide back. That usually means an 8 by 10 or 9 by 12 rug.

In a small apartment, set the desk perpendicular to the window for daylight without glare on the screen. An acrylic chair keeps the view open, though I'd keep it for short sessions only.

Can a velvet chair be glam and comfortable?

Yes, but not every velvet chair will be. As an architect, I recommend against dining chairs for full-time work. They lack adjustable height, lumbar support and the right seat depth for long days.

For a velvet office chair glam look, buy a real task chair and pick the upholstery and base finish you like, such as a polished base and a jewel-tone or light grey fabric. Check that it tilts and supports your lower back.

Whatever the chair, set it up for your body. OSHA's computer workstation guidance says the elbows stay in close to the body and are bent between 90 and 120 degrees, and its workstation checklist puts the top of the monitor at or just below eye level. A pretty setup that hurts by 3 p.m. isn't glam.
